The Ghana Informal Economy Workplace HIV Policy has been launched.  Under the auspices of the Steering Committee comprising the ILO, the Ministry of Manpower Youth and Employment, Ghana Association of Garages, Ghanna Union of Trade Associations, Ghana Association of Women Entepreneurs and others, the policy was launched athe Conference Hall of the Ghana National Association of Teachers Building.  At the same meeting the ILO COde of Practice translated into Five Ghanaian languages was inaugurated.

The Program Director of the GBCA, attended a landmark conference of the PABC at which the first Board of Directors was elected to replace the interim Board.  The meeting took place in October 2008 at the VIP Hotel, Maputo.  The eleven member Board was elected from 27 member business coalitions with representation from East Central, West and South Africa.

The PABC took advantage of this meeting to provide some training for the particpants at the meeting.  This meeting was sponsored by Stanbic Bank and GTZ.

This years World AIDS Day fell on December 1st 2008 as usual.  Member companies of the GBCA held various events to mark the occassion. Notable among these were Texstyles Ghana Ltd., Unilever, Standard Chartered Bank and the Graphic Communications Group.  The event was also marked by a launch at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle by the Ghana AIDS Commission.

The GBCA sent a delegation to the 15th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa, ICASA 2008, which took place from  3-7 December. The ICASA XV Conference was held at the Hotel Meridien President, in Dakar, Senegal.  The GBCA delegation consisted of the Program Director, Dr. Derek Aryee and Program Officer, Dr. Adriana Ignea.  Also in the delegation were Mrs. Amerley Awua-Asamoah of the Electricity Company of Ghana (GBCA member) and Mr. Daniel Amponsah of the Coopertive Transport Union (Informal economy).  The program was funded by the ILO/PAF Project.

In the month of November the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd., introduced 75 volunteers and focal persons tothe basic concepts of peer education.  This workshop was facilitated by GBCA and its partners, such as Hope for Future Generations, The ILO, Academy for Educational development, and the National Tuberculosis Control Program.

The GBCA was selected as a participant at the GEREU Exhibition for companies and businesses to mark the Oktoberfest of 2008.  The GBCA mounted a booth where it displayed information and education materials, distributed condoms and gave information to visitors to the booth.

Voluntary Counselling and Testing programs have been in various member companies during the year.  The first were held at the Graphics Communications Group Ltd. and the Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Ltd, in collaboration with GTZ, ILO and staff of the Ghana Health Service. In all 77 and 107 staff of GCG and SCB were counselled and tested respectively.

Unilever Ghana will also benefitted from a similar counselling and testing exercise on the 24th July.

15 companies participated in a 3 day training workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation of HIV & AIDS Workplace Programs (M&E of WPP). The training is based on ACCA Toolbox (developed by GTZ and Swiss Tropical Institute, Global Business Coalition), an interactive computer model which allows to design, monitor and evaluate own M&E systems by the implementing companies. It is as well intended that the indicators used by the companies will be harmonized with the national indicators, so that the contribution of the private sector and businesses implementing workplace programs could be better summarized and integrated in the national response to HIV & AIDS

The first in this series was a two day workshop that took place in Accra in June. Six companies participated. The representives were trained to help the HIV committees ikn their workplaces to design a draft of their workplace HIV policy which can be adopted after further consultations with the workforce and management.

The four day training took place from the 23rd of May 2008. The excel-based 'HIV/AIDS Cost-Benefit-Analysis' was developed by GTZ with support of the Swiss Tropical Institute. The tool is a valuable monitoring instrument for HR departments interested in following up on what HIV/AIDS really means to the company in economic terms. It helps to monitor absenteeism, increased training and medical costs, etc. as well as the costs that the company is willing to spend on prevention, care and mitigation activities. By processing all company data, the tool allows to establish a cost-benefit ratio of an HIV/AIDS workplace programme with the help of an epidemiological model of HIV/AIDS.
